Montage was founded in 1959 By Albert W. Sylvester and Howell A. Bates to provide furniture, fabrics and lighting to the design trade. Montage relocated to 420 Boylston Street when Chris Bates became the second generation owner in 1963 where it maintained a high profile showroom designed by the New York design firm of Kiviat/Rappaport.

In 1985 Montage was proud to become one of the charter tenants in the new Boston Design Center. In November of 2002 after a five-year search for the perfect location Montage opened its Flagship Store at 75 Arlington Street in Boston's fashionable Back Bay, the former home of Paine's Furniture - the original grand dame of furniture in Boston.

Originally conceived to introduce the finest in contemporary furniture from Europe to the Boston design community, Montage's list of furniture manufacturers reads like a who's who of the design world: Acerbis, Alias, B&B Italia, Cassina, DeSede, Fiam Italia, and Poltrona Frau are but a few of the prestigious companies Montage is proud to partner with in New England.

Montage also has provided opportunities for talented new furniture designers. One such designer is Massachusetts-born, and San Francisco based Marc Desplaines, whose hand crafted Antoine Proulx furnishings have been featured prominently at Montage.

Montage remains a family-run business to this day with Chris Bates' retirement, his son Erik Bates is the third generation owner along with his partner and co owner Elizabeth Bates.

As Montage has over 50 years of sales and service to discriminating New Englanders, we still remain true to our founding principals: offering the highest possible level of products and service available in the design world.
